But when we are fed this from childhood, and also have a need to put a dogs personality in understandable (to us!) classifications, maybe it's not so strange that we anthropomorphize sometimes? But anthropomorphizing often leads to unfair punishment (vi think we understand why the dog does what it does, "she usually knows this" or "he knows it's doing something wrong", or to babying and fussing over on the other side of the scale.
