Puppies under three months of age should not be vaccinated. Give one vaccination of distemper at three months, followed by a vaccination for parvovirus at four months of age, and stop with that. Prior to giving these shots, be very careful where you take your puppy, but don't be afraid to socialize. Just avoid dog parks, and other areas where lots of dogs may be or frequent. A single immunizing dose of a modified live virus vaccine – in other words, one vaccine that works – will form long-term, probably lifetime immunity to parvo and distemper. Immunologists tell us that the only time a vaccination needs to be repeated is if a puppy doesn’t respond to the first one, i.e. if his immune system doesn’t form immunizing antibodies. If this happens in a puppy, it’s almost always due to the presence of maternal antibodies. Puppies get antibodies (passive immunity) from their mother’s milk. This natural protection lasts many weeks. Since maternal antibodies neutralize vaccines, you need to vaccinate AFTER these antibodies have worn off. This is why vets want to give puppies vaccinations over and over – so that eventually one will be given after the maternal antibodies have worn off. Distemper and parvovirus vaccines are available as modified-live or killed. Some of owners wait until the maternal antibodies have worn off (11-16 weeks old). Then they give one vaccination against distemper and one against parvovirus. And they have their vet use modified-live vaccines, rather than killed vaccines. After that, Titers for distemper and parvovirus. If the ration comes back 1:5 (or a number greater than 5) you're good. Of course there are some valid reasons why a titer test would come back zero and the dog still be immune (such as recently exposed to a virus among others). Do some googling on titers. All the other shots (except Rabies) are virtually ineffective or of no lasting value. In the case of Rabies vacs, use "killed" version since because of state/local law, you'll be required by law to give either ever year or once every 3 years depending on regulations. The killed version of the rabies virus will be less stressful on the immune system than modified live every year or three. A dog is likely good to go for life with only one Rabies vaccination but who wants to break the law and expose themselves to fines, precautionary medical expenses if your dog happens to bite someone and possible lawsuits....to continue reading this article please click on here...
