Calcium-phosphorus proportion is of great importance; if there is a deficiency of either of the two elements the damage of physical development can happen and this is more often indicated in limb contortion and brittleness of bones. Potassium makes nervous system healthy and enables proper body growth; magnesium is essential for fastening of nervous system; natrium and chlorine give good appetite and arouse activity; iodine is necessary for normal functioning of thyroid gland; cuprum is for muscular and osseous tissues formation; zinc is useful for general development. However one shouldn’t give too many microelements to the dog as excess of them can harm the body rather then benefit. The bones, preferably soft, cartilaginous, (beef’s, mutton’s, etc.) contain a lot of microelements. It is not recommended to give cylindrical bones. Sodium chloride is reservoir of natrium and chlorine; nevertheless, it should not be added to food in very large quantities. It is recommended to include salines, calcium gluconate and glycerophosphate, phytin in diet of five-month puppy in the ratio of 2:2:1 (best if tableted). After 15 days it is possible to double amount of salines and in another month- triple. Mineral supplementation is provided till the puppy is 10 months and then excluded from the diet. From that time the dog will get fair number of minerals contained in food. Pit bull terrier’s food When there are abnormalities in pup’s development, one should reduce or increase quantity of mineral substances. For example, if the ears are not up for a long time it means that a puppy lacks calcium. In that case one may give 15 tablets of calcium daily. Puppy is allowed to drink water only from its three weeks age, even if it keeps on nursing. Dish with water must be always clean and within pup’s reach. Daylong little puppy is often nourished with food in small doses. Till the puppy is two months it is necessary to feed it no less than 6 times per day. At the age of 2-4 months the puppy is fed 5 times a day and then the number of feedings should be reduced to 3.
