Why are fearful American Pit Bull Terriers becoming more common? What is anxiety? Anxiety can be a normal physiological and physical response to distress. Anxiety has been defined as a feeling of apprehension, fear, or worry accompanied by restlessness or tension that is experienced in response to, or anticipation of, some environmental stimulus. Most humans experience anxiety and are familiar with the resultant stress effects. In humans this can range from a mild excitement, aggression, or nervousness to the extremes of debilitating phobias. Canines have similar psychophysiological responses to real or anticipated danger. Dogs may exhibit extreme signs of anxiety to the point that it also can be debilitating. APBT owners and especially those considering breeding their dogs should be especially concerned about anxiety disorders. Such disorders are extremely easy to overlook in the American Pit Bull Terrier. One of the most abundant forms of kennel blindness is in relation to the temperament of the dogs in our yard. It is also very easy for the APBT breeder to make excuses for anxiety disorders or ignore them when it comes time to breed their titled stud (that only is afraid of certain judges) or prized bitches (that were timid as pups but grew out of it). The danger in breeding animals with such psychological or physical disorders is that there is a very high likelihood that these disorders can be inherited and even bioamplified (become worse) in the projeny. There are also medical conditions which manifest as anxiety disorders that are heritable. It has to be recognized that such inheritance can result in setting these traits into the genetic fabric of an entire Bloodline. It has been estimated that up to 80% of adult canines may suffer from some type of anxiety disorder in their lifetime. The primary linkage for anxiety disorders in canines has been made to dams and sires with anxiety disorders. Anxiety appears to have a definite genetic component.
