Veterinarians have also raised red flags about the dangers of road salt to animals. Road salt can make animals sick. When ingested by our pets, the ice melters "can upset animals' digestive systems, causing vomiting and diarrhea A person who lost his dog to cancer is warning dog owners about the toxic dangers of road salt. The explanation of the fact why road salt can be dangerous to dogs, is the following: "Upon returning home from their walks, dogs would ingest this toxic substance by licking their paws." A veterinary oncologist suggests that a toxin in the environment, such as road salt, was likely responsible for the dogs' cancers because similar symptoms had been seen in several other cases. CBC also reports that the University of Victoria published an initial study in 2000 that found links between "road salt" and "cancer." Acknowledging the study, the Canadian Cancer Society later stated that we shouldn't yet make final conclusions until further medical and scientific research is done. The "salt" used on roads, driveways and paths should not be confused with harmless table salt. The snow-melters and de-icers commonly used are chemical compounds, many of which cause painful burns to dogs' feet, as well as to their tongues and mouths as they lick their paws clean. Your pet’s paw pads can become cracked and dry. Ask your vet to prescribe a veterinary moisturiser – do not use a human one – and massage into your pet’s paws. Start by rubbing and massaging the veterinary moisturiser between the pads on the bottom of the paw and then move between each toe. For Dogs only Vaseline is also a great barrier against salt so rub it onto your dog’s paws before each walk.
