If you are a first time trainer/handler, you need to check out the Delta Society to see if there is a chapter in your area for Therapy Dog training and certification. According to the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), Service animals are not required to be certified by ANY agency, but should display civil and obedient behavior. Also, all Service animals (including therapy dogs) do not need to wear any sort of identification (vest, bandanna, etc.) to show that they are a service animal, but it is usually recommended so there aren't any problems. A few helpful steps to ensuring therapy dog training success: 1) Don't kid yourself; if your dog is not 100% sound around people/children acting strange, do not even start training. 2) Take the dog into dog-friendly stores that often have loud/strange noises, such as Home Depot. Take consideration that your dog MAY startle at a loud noise (such as the saw in the wood dept), but must recover from the scare quickly and confidently. If the dog hears a new noise that could be scary, and decides to investigate, PRAISE!! 3) Get a health certificate from your vet before either CGC or ATT certifying your dog. Ensuring your dog is disease and pest free is an absolute MUST when handling a therapy dog. 4) Get your dog used to baths, if they are not already used to them. Therapy dogs are expected to be sparkling clean whenever they enter any environment, be it a nursing home or a hospital. Bringing a dirty dog (even dirty paws) is a sure-fire way to NOT be invited back. 5) Contact local hospitals, nursing homes, montesorri schools (for learning-disabled/mentally-handicapped children), and rehabilitation centers in your area to see if there is any interest. Be sure to inquire about what they will require a dog to do/have in order to visit the facility.
