White merles are almost always double merle & sometimes will have little to no merling on their entire body giving the impression of a white dog. This occurs because merle is a dilution gene. If merle acts on a black coat, the result is blue merle. In most cases, if merle acts on a merle coat (i.e. from a merle x merle breeding) the already diluted fur will be further diluted to white. However, recent studies have found that white coloration is not always an indicator of a double merle. In some cases double merles can look like a normal merle or even a dark colored non-merle. - Heavily marked merles. In the case of these dogs, the merling is so heavy that it covers almost the entire body, once again giving the impression the dog is not merle. Usually these dogs look black with maybe a blue patch on the ear tip or the back of the neck. If the dog is very heavily merled it may only have a few blue hairs. But again, despite their non-merle appearance all are in fact merles. Then there is the third theory, "The Cryptic Merle" theory. This too has some merit. You see, merle is not a color but rather a pattern. And not only is it a pattern, it is a modifier. That means it "modifies" a coat color that has already been predermined by genes at other locations. If merle acts on a black coat, the result is blue merle. If it acts on a chocolate coat, the result is red merle. And so on.
