According to recent study, merle is a very old mutation said to be present in the genome of the common ancestor of ALL dog breeds (to include the APBT). As a result, while merle is an autosomal incomplete dominant, it can still mutate into a breed not thought to have merle. The most recent find of merle in a supposed non-merle carrying breed is the French Bulldog . Now are there some mixed bred merles? Of course. Are there some purebred merles? Yes. But just because there are some questionably bred merles out there does not mean they are all mixed. Heck, there are mixed bred brindles, mixed bred rednoses, mixed bred blues, mixed bred blacks & mixed bred whites as well. So does this mean ALL brindles, rednoses, blues, blacks & whites are mixed? Of course not! People wouldn't even THINK of holding such an attitude concerning these colors, even though it is a proven fact there are dogs of such colors who are mixed bred. But many people seem to like to take this train of thought concerning merles. Baffling. The fact is NO ONE knows FOR A FACT where merle came from. There are mixed bred merles, but there are also purebred merles. To make matters worse, there is proof for ALL the theories we've discussed in this article. So the subject is far from cut and dried. The only thing to be advised is to please read and consider ALL possibilities. Don't just stop investigating as soon as you come across information that fits a preconceived notion of you hold or that fits some propaganda someone has touted as the "truth." We live in a big world with all kinds of possibilities. A lot has gone on before we got to this earth and a lot will go on after we leave. None of us know it all. And most importantly before you buy a merle (or a dog of any color) and whatever you do, before you buy RESEARCH THE BREEDER & RESEARCH THE BLOODLINES THEY ARE USING!!.
