A number of drugs may be of use in the management of anxiety in dogs. It is recommended that drugs are never used as hopes of a cure but rather as a tool to enhance the efficacy of behavior modification training. The objective of drugs would not be to alleviate symptoms (e.g. elimination, destruction) but to reduce the occurrence during early stages of therapy. As Therapy for the dog progresses the use of these drugs should be reduced and eliminated. The most extensively documented drug, and the only one approved worldwide for separation anxiety in dogs, is clomipramine hydrochloride commonly described as clomipramine . Another drug known as L-deprenyl (Selgian) has approved worldwide in dogs but has an approval for "anxiety issues" only in certain European countries. Before starting Therapy with non-licensed products, veterinarians should discuss the benefit and risks ratio with the owners of dogs. The hope is that such drugs may promote a more successful behavior Therapy as animals may be more responsive to this Therapy when less anxious. Because behavior Therapy to treat anxiety typically involves exposure to stressful situations the more mild response induced by drug Therapy can be used in initial stages of Behavioral Conditioning. In all cases as noted, medications should be used in conjunction with Therapy to gain best long term results and the dog should be weaned off of the drugs as Therapy progresses..
