How do I know if my APBT has an anxiety disorder? Diagnosis of anxiety disorders involves examination of the situations that bring on symptoms of the disorder, followed by a systematic rule out of other reasons for the displayed symptoms. These could include medical conditions, such as metabolic or endocrine disorders. If any of the above signs are observed it is extremely likely your dog suffers from an anxiety disorder. Generally, disorders begin early - for instance, many phobias arise early in puppyhood (fearful puppies), social phobias and obsessive compulsive disorders around 6-12 months, and the remainder of severe disorders usually before the age of 3 years of age. Diagnosis of an anxiety disorder generally involves evaluation of symptomatic behaviors (noted above) in the presence of stimuli commonly eliciting anxiety (thunderstorms, fireworks, departure of the owner). Other possible causes, such as medical conditions, need to be ruled out at that point. Medical conditions can include thyroid or adrenal gland dysfunctions. These medical conditions can be evaluated through simple blood tests that your veterinarian can perform. If such conditions are related to medical conditions these conditions are usually inherited and animals with these conditions should be spayed or neutered and not used for breeding purposes. Indeed any animal displaying even mild anxiety disorders should not be used for breeding purposes even if these disorders seem to go away as the dog gets older (4-5 years old). What can I do if I suspect my dog has an anxiety disorder? Even if you suspect an animal MIGHT have an anxiety disorder, do not breed the animal. Treatment of anxiety can have positive effects on the quality of life for the animal.
